We can, we must, and we will! These are the words that Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala, MSMS president welcomed the attendees of the annual Capitol check-Up in Lansing. The scheduled event was well attended and extremely informative. Topics included Universal Healthcare access, Budget challenges and the reimbursement of Medicaid and Medicare programs. The agenda also discussed pending public health issues and how to get the most out of the 2008 Elections.
Dr. Jack Evjy, explained the new health care model that was recently adopted in the state of Massachusetts. He shared with us some of the basic principles that this system is built on, along with some interesting results as well.
Over all, the discussion was vibrant and generated lots of response and questions from the listeners. Many Legislators were questioned on the effectiveness of some of the mechanisms that are in place to facilitate better care. Some of the physicians and Alliance member’s expressed their deep concern regarding the shortage of primary health care providers. They discussed some of the reasons for this shortage which was in large related to the poor imbursements of Medicaid /Medicare patients.
Affording our health care doesn’t only rely on the introducing and the passing of bills, it also depends on our level of involvement. Grass root effort has consistently proving the most effective. We, have an obligation to our society. And yes, we can, we must and we will.
